Biogeographical Distribution
C. polypus was discovered in 1775 by Forskål, who had collected some specimens from the Red Sea at Ghomfodam, Saudi Arabia (Fautin, 2008). At the time it was discovered, it was originally called Priapus polypus. It was later moved into the genera Calliactis.
